Position Overview
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced nursing professionals for the position of Clinical Program Coordinator: Infection Control, based at the Amajuba Health District Office. This role is situated within the Integrated District Health System Development Service and is critical to strengthening infection prevention and control systems across health institutions within the district.
The position is aimed at enhancing patient safety, staff protection, and service quality through the development, coordination, monitoring, and continuous improvement of infection control practices. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with health institutions, district management, and external stakeholders to support the effective implementation of infection prevention and control strategies in line with national policies, professional standards, and public health priorities.

Remuneration and Benefits
The post offers an annual remuneration package of R464 466, determined in accordance with applicable public service regulations and recognised experience.
In addition to the basic salary, the successful candidate may qualify for a rural allowance, payable on a claim basis, subject to relevant departmental policies and conditions of service.
All remuneration and benefits are governed by public service prescripts and may be subject to adjustment in line with policy directives.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements to be considered for appointment:
- A valid Grade 12 certificate
- An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree, National Diploma, or equivalent qualification in Nursing
- Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse in General Nursing
- A minimum of seven (7) years of appropriate and recognisable nursing experience after registration as a Professional Nurse
- Current registration with SANC for the applicable year
Shortlisted candidates will be required to submit detailed proof of current and previous work experience, endorsed by the relevant Human Resource departments.
Recommendations and Added Advantages
While not mandatory, the following will be considered advantageous:
- A valid driver’s licence (Code B)
- A recognised certificate in Infection Prevention and Control
- Demonstrated computer literacy relevant to reporting, data management, and programme coordination

Key Responsibilities and Duties
The Clinical Program Coordinator: Infection Control will be responsible for a wide range of strategic, operational, and coordination functions, including but not limited to the following:
- Developing, implementing, and maintaining a District Infection Control Improvement Plan, aligned with national and provincial health policies
- Facilitating processes to support the effective implementation of infection control plans by health institutions within the district
- Monitoring infection control indicators using appropriate tools and methodologies, and reporting on findings, trends, and areas of concern
- Coordinating training and development initiatives to strengthen employee knowledge, skills, and awareness of infection prevention and control practices
- Promoting a culture that recognises the importance of infection control as a core component of quality healthcare delivery
- Monitoring infection control arrangements within health institutions to ensure that plans are adequately implemented and maintained
- Assessing preparedness and contingency arrangements for the prevention and management of infectious disease outbreaks
- Supporting the establishment, functionality, and ongoing training of Infection Control Committees at health institutions
- Providing technical advice and support to facility-based staff on infection control matters
- Engaging with external health accreditation representatives to identify gaps, recommend improvements, and support compliance initiatives
- Participating in programmes, research activities, or projects aimed at strengthening infection prevention and control systems within the district
- Compiling and submitting reports to district management and relevant stakeholders as required
- Contributing to district-level planning, monitoring, and evaluation processes related to clinical governance and quality improvement
Work Environment
The Amajuba Health District operates within a diverse healthcare environment that includes hospitals, community health centres, and clinics serving urban and rural populations. The Clinical Program Coordinator will function within a district management framework and collaborate closely with facility managers, clinical teams, programme managers, and external partners.
The role requires a high level of professionalism, analytical ability, and commitment to public service values. The incumbent must be able to work independently while also contributing effectively to multidisciplinary teams.
